CLEAR (without clouds) or CLOUDY (with many clouds in the sky)
Bright – full of light; when the sun is shining strongly
Sunny – the sun is shining and there are no clouds
Fine – not raining, clear sky
Partially cloudy – when there is a mixture of both blue sky and clouds
Overcast / Dull– covered with cloud
Gloomy – with dark clouds and dull light; depressing weather
Foggy – thick cloud close to land
Misty – light fog, often on the sea or caused by drizzle
Hazy – light mist, usually caused by heat
HOT WEATHER
Boiling hot – a very hot day
Drought – a long period with no rainfall
Scorching – extremely hot temperature
COOL WEATHER – temperature in between warm and cold
RAINY WEATHER
Rain – water that falls from the clouds in drops)
Damp -slightly wet (often after the rain has stopped)
Drizzle – to rain lightly with very fine drops
Shower – a short period of rain
Downpour – heavy rain
Pour – to have heavy rain
It’s raining cats and dogs (idiom) – to rain heavily
Torrential rain – very heavy rain
Flood – to become covered in water usually due to excessive rain
COLD WEATHER
Chilly – cold enough to cause discomfort
Freezing – when it is very cold, weather marked by low temperature especially when below the freezing point
Hail – when frozen rain falls as small balls of ice (hailstones).
Hailstones – the small hard balls of ice that fall from the sky
Snow – frozen rain that falls from the sky as soft snowflakes
Snowflake – an individual piece of snow
Flurries – very light snowfall
Sleet – snow or hail mixed with rain (often with some wind)
Blizzard – severe snowstorm with strong winds
WINDY (continual wind)
Breeze – a gentle wind (often nice or refreshing)
Blustery – blowing (strong) gusts of wind
Gale – a very strong wind
Hurricane (Atlantic/Northeast Pacific) /Cyclone (Southern Hemisphere) /Typhoon (Northwest Pacific) – a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce winds and heavy rain.
Tornado – strong violent circular winds in a small area; a rapidly revolving column of air
